Resolutely into 2007

The fact that I’m turning 40 this year (note countdown clock) creates a sense of urgency to my usually casual new year resolution ponderings. It’s not that I’m freaked out by getting older. I’ve generally considered each decade to be the best, except in the areas of health & fitness. I had some really tough years in my 30s healthwise. I intend my 40s to leave that period of my life far behind. Approaching birthdays seem like important milestones at which I would like to have made significant progress in the fitness department. However, the thought of hitting 40 and finding myself still having made little progress is really intolerable. Since past experience tells me that anything requiring a great deal of my focus is doomed to failure, I’ve been trying to come up with a few goals that I think would make the most impact. I’ve decided that there are three things are I can reasonably focus on and that will give me the most bang for my efforts:

  1. Getting more sleep
  2. Walking 30 minutes a day
  3. A good breakfast with protein

All of these will help me be more fit and will help me loose the extra pounds I’ve been putting on for 10+ years. All will help rev up my metabolism early in the day (burning more calories all day) and help keep my stress levels down so my body won’t be in fat storing mode. I will of course continue with my other misc healthy habits, like having good snacks on hand so I won’t go too long without food. Good habits are always easier to keep when you aren’t exhausted and stressed all the time.
