Lee Holden - 7 Minutes of Magic

Got 7 minutes?

Years ago I discovered Lee Holden’s exercise DVD: “7 Minutes of Magic” when I had the challenge of coming back from a series of injuries. This DVD has been the one I return to again and again because it is perfect for fitting into a busy day. It includes three different types of routines and that…

I like to bike slow

I like to exercise outside and enjoy the sights along the way. When I ride with my husband he shouts out practical warnings – like glass in the road – while I shout out “squirrel!” He manages to bike with me for a short distance and then heads on down the road for his “real”…

Joy riding

I have always loved riding my bike. When I was a kid I even went to a summer camp that spent the second week on a bike trip. When I was a transportation planning intern at the SoCal Assoc. of Governments, I rode my bike to the Long Beach Bikestation and then hopped on the…

Regular exercise isn’t enough

Recently I’ve FINALLY made big progress with my ankle injury. I started walking with a local group and have been doing some private fitness training with an emphasis on core strength. I went from not being able to walk more than 30 minutes without my ankle swelling and becoming painful to being able to do…

Sacredness of Open Spaces

You may have noticed that I love trees. One of my favorite things is walking down a winding path through the woods. Add a lovely babbling brook and I’m in heaven. I naturally enjoyed being in the outdoors as a child, but as an adult I’ve become convinced about the importance of spending time in…

Wellness Makeover: Morning Exercise

Photo: Love this web of roots along my downtown walk route Getting back on track with good wellness habits has been on my mind for a while. I kept shifting it down my mental to-do list as more pressing items seemed to take priority. Of course in the long run, I would only become less…

Finding a state of wellbeing

Photo: Rare evening walk in Falls Park There have been a number of reasons why I haven’t blogged for almost two years – yes, TWO YEARS! In future posts, I’ll talk about some of what has been happening in my life. One of them is that I got way off the path in my quest…

Fitness Faith & Practice

Lately I have been feeling grateful for how effortless my exercise habits have become. They are purposefully modest ones. My focus has been on making exercise pleasurable and doable. Now it is usually a matter of when, rather than if, I’m going to exercise. I’m especially happy that when I get stressed out my reaction…

Without Further Ado

What can ya say when you’ve been off the grid for a good four months! I just couldn’t let my birthday go by without a peep here. Yeah, after all that turning-40 hullabaloo last year, I nearly let 41 go by unmentioned. But really the silence speaks volumes. It’s been a significant year for me…

Chasing the Sun

The sun was shining today and I came so close to getting out for a nice walk in it. I caught glimpses of it and planned to sneak my walk in various ways between a hectic schedule. However, I managed to not get moving quick enough and missed my opportunity. Instead I had to take…

Best and most difficult part of my week was figuri Best and most difficult part of my week was figuring out how to rescue this adorable 8-week old that appeared outside our apartment building. She was too scared to let me touch her but she wanted to be friends. My bruised knees attest to how long it took to convince her to go for the food bowl in the carrier. Thanks to many failures, I'm now really good at strategically placing small tastes of canned food along a stick to entice her closer and closer. I had to wait until finally the time her head AND ALL four paws went inside to shut the door without her getting away. Had a rope tied to the door* to shut it from a distance, but the winning move was playfully looking at her through the holes in the carrier so she felt safe enough to enter. After vet visit and her safe arrival at a friend's house, I finally got to hold her and was rewarded with sweetest neck nuzzles. 🥰
* Warning: panicked kitten almost immediately got rope wrapped around her neck so plan for quick removal of rope if you try this!
Found one of my mom's old favorite restaurants now Found one of my mom's old favorite restaurants now located near us. We enjoyed the beef koobideh and dolmas 😋 Loved being seated by the fountain! The wine glasses are almost as big as my mom 😂
